The Role of Surgical Blades in Dermatology vs. Major Surgery

Surgical blades are among the most fundamental yet essential tools in modern medicine. Whether used for delicate skin procedures or life-saving surgeries, these small but powerful instruments play a critical role across various medical fields. Understanding how they are applied differently in dermatology  and major surgery  helps highlight their versatility and importance in clinical settings.

Founded in 2002, Suzhou Texnet  is a leading China-based supplier specializing in high-quality disposable medical products. Located in the Suzhou Industrial Park — just an hour’s drive from Shanghai — we take pride in holding CE and ISO 13485 certifications by TÜV , as well as being FDA registered . Over the past two decades, we have grown from a small startup into a key player in the global medical supply industry, achieving consistent year-over-year turnover growth.

What Is a Surgical Blade?
A surgical blade is a small, sharp cutting instrument typically made from high-grade stainless steel , though alternatives such as ceramic  or plastic  are also available for specific uses. These blades are mounted onto scalpel handles during procedures and come in various shapes and sizes, each identified by a standard number (e.g., #10, #15, #20). Each number corresponds to a unique shape and intended clinical purpose.

The Role of Surgical Blades in Dermatology
Dermatology focuses on diagnosing and treating conditions related to the skin, hair, and nails. In this field, surgical blades are primarily used for minor, superficial procedures  that require precision and minimal tissue disruption.

Key Functions:
Diagnostic Biopsies
Dermatologists often perform shave biopsies or punch biopsies using small blades like the #15  or #10  to remove suspicious lesions for histopathological analysis.

Removal of Benign Growths
Skin tags, seborrheic keratoses, and pyogenic granulomas can be safely and efficiently removed with surgical blades under local anesthesia.

Wound Debridement
Dead or infected tissue from wounds or ulcers is gently scraped away to promote healing and prevent infection.

Cosmetic Procedures (e.g., Dermaplaning)
A non-invasive treatment where a #10 or #15 blade is used to exfoliate the skin and remove fine vellus hair, resulting in smoother, brighter skin.

Preferred Blade Types:
#10 : Large, curved blade ideal for long, smooth cuts and shaving larger lesions.
#15 : Small, sharply curved blade perfect for precise cuts in tight areas.
#64 : Very small and pointed, used for intricate facial work.
Disposable Dermablades : Some clinics prefer single-use dermablades for added safety and hygiene.

At Suzhou Texnet, we offer a wide selection of sterile, individually-packaged surgical blades  designed specifically for dermatological use. Our products meet international safety and sterility standards, ensuring optimal performance and patient safety.
